Material Selection: Forgings are typically made from high-grade case-hardening alloy steels such as 20CrMnTi, 8620, or 9310. These materials are chosen for their ability to be heat-treated to achieve a hard, wear-resistant surface while maintaining a tough, impact-resistant core.

Machining and Forging: The gears are often precision-forged to a near-net shape before machining. CNC machining is then used to achieve final dimensions on the gear teeth, bearing journals, and mounting surfaces.

Heat Treatment: The gears undergo a carburizing (case hardening) process. This enriches the surface carbon content, allowing it to be hardened to a typical depth of 1.0-1.5 mm while the core remains tough. This is followed by quenching and tempering to achieve the desired mechanical properties.

Finishing Processes: After heat treatment, the critical step of hard finishing is performed. This often involves grinding of the bearing journals and, for ultra-quiet operation, lapping or skiving of the gear teeth to ensure perfect tooth geometry, surface finish, and optimal meshing patterns.

Quality Control and Testing: Each gear set is subject to rigorous inspection. This includes:

Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) checks for dimensional accuracy.

Gear tooth geometry analysis using specialized gear checkers.

Hardness testing to verify case depth and surface/core hardness.

Non-destructive testing (NDT) like Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) to detect surface defects.

Matched Sets: High-quality pinion and crown gears are lapped together as a matched pair and should always be replaced as a set to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
